Eight of Eight was the Khai Tam nickname for John Williams. Members of the club who were particularly active or noteworthy generally were given (or adopted) nicknames.

It was already a ship's tradition by this time to supply subsequent Johns with catchy nicknames to avoid having to simply call them, "John" since that was reserved for Captain Jon Reddick.
