Kevin joined the USS ''Khai Tam'' in April of 1993 with a [http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Bajoran Bajoran] persona. At the time ''Khai Tam'' XO [[Ro Reddick]], a ferverent Bajoran herself, was ecstatic to have another Bajoran aboard. When she asked him his persona/charecter nickname, Kevin spontaneously created "Kvyn Tai" on the fly. Ro immediately started calling Kevin "Tai" and the rest of the ship followed suit. Ship members used the name so heavily, that some were not even aware of Kevin's real first name. Even today, his friends from the ship rarely call him by any other name.

Though Kevin changed his persona after a year or two to an [http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Andorian Andorian], his nickname was in such heavy use by then that he retained the name, but reversed the first and last so that the Andorian's name would be pronounced "Tai Kyvn." Due to the Bajoran tradition of placing the given name AFTER the family name rather than before, both his persona's had a first name of "Tai."
